Dear Parishioners and Friends of Our Lady of Guadalupe,
Once again on this Sunday, the core of today’s readings calls us to look at the way we treat our sisters and brothers, especially the poor.
In the Book of Amos, we hear the Lord saying: “Woe to you who eat, drink and are merry, and forget those around you who are starving and less fortunate.” Woe means shame on you.
In the Gospel, Jesus tells the Pharisees the story of Lazarus, the poor man lying at the door of a rich man. The rich man everyday would walk over Lazarus while leaving his home. The rich man never abused Lazarus. He never harmed him. What was his greatest sin is that he just ignored the poor man.
In the end, Lazarus is now in Heaven, and the rich man never makes it. He wants the Lord to remind his brothers, who are still on earth, not to ignore those in need.
Our city is filled with many like Lazarus. Just look outside our church and throughout the city. Alone we can’t solve the homeless situation. We can’t go on a guilt trip every time we see someone homeless. But let us never ignore the problem. What can I do to support efforts to provide housing, mental health centers and addiction programs that are so desperately needed in our city?
St. Jude is the Saint for the Hopeless. May our Patron Saint guide us in our efforts to touch the many, like Lazarus, we see each day.
Have a Blessed Week, Fr. Tony
